Too Many Chiefs, Not Enough Indians...

This is something that I've observed at work over the past couple of days: too many people, regardless of whether or not they have the experience or authority, want to be in a high and mighty comanding position, which leaves not that many who would obey willingly. It doesn't sound like a very good situation, does it? Which am I? I try to be neither and just do my job.

What's the point of sharing this observation? There's really no point. Quiet frankly, I'm just blogging as a way to procrastinate doing other, more important things, which include eating and showering, but you probably didn't to know that. Heehee.

Anyway, back to our regular scheduled programming... which is, K-dramas. After the monster, that is Jumong ended its run, most of the shows that premiered are so good and diverse in theme and storyline. Thus far, I've seen Hello! Miss, Witch Amusement, H.I.T., and The Devil. Based on high recommendations, I'm probably going to check out Thank you and Que Sera Sera. Wow, that's a lot of drama-watching. And I haven't even finished the shows that I started previously. Ah geez, otoke?

Also, I came across this great blog, which has episodic summaries of several of the latest dramas. Do check it out here! Thank you, javabeans dear for your time and effort in maintaining the blog.

De-stressing...

I'm starting school this coming May and I've just received the paperwork, which include the usual orientation information, health record, etc. So, I was looking at the immunization form, thinking this is going to be easy since I still have access to my immunization form. Boy, was I wrong! It turns out that most, if not all, of my vaccinations have expired, which means that I would have to get these done all over again. And you know what that means, right? My two arms will most likely go limp from all those shots and since I have no health insurance, they'll burn a giant hole in my wallet at a time when I need to save money to prepare for my move to a different city, where the school is located. In addition, I have to go down to the school for a scholarship interview, come back home, and then go to the school again for some uniform fitting and to take a math test prior to entering the program. Math test? What the..? Do I even remember how to do math?! Damn, this sucks!

I need to do some major de-stressing. I must think happy thoughts... Hence, I shall go watch my K-dramas now. A good dose of it will lift my mood, I hope. That is, if I'm not going to watch People In Love because not only will it not help me, it will instead aggravate me and make me want to throw heavy objects or break something. My current addiction: Witch Amusement. Actually, I feel bad for not being into H!M as much as WA because my favorite girl is in H!M and I should give her my full support. But WA is so fun and entertaining! What a dilemma! Wait a minute, am I stressing myself out again? Aish, I need to stop. WA episode 2, here I come!

Random Rant

I'm not feeling well at the moment. I think I got food poisoning or something along those lines. Note to self and those who are reading this: do not consume leftover pizza that is four days old, no matter how "normal" it looked or tasted. I repeat, do not! Trust me on this one.
-----
I finally finished watching Save the Last Dance for Me after it has been taking space on my computer for months. I also finished The Snow Queen. So that's a total of 36 hours of my life, mostly wasted on nothing more than eye candies. Surprisingly, I liked the former more than the latter even though it doesn't have Hyun Bin. I'm not that shallow, you know. I can be objective too, sometimes.
-----
I'm also done with Hwang Jin Yi and I loved it! One of the best dramas I've seen to date. I've been wanting to write a review of sort for the drama but it's quite difficult coming up with right wording and organizing all my thoughts into one that's coherent and detailed. I'll try and see if I can get one together because I really want to get the word out on how great this show is. Highly recommended!
-----
The premiere for Witch Amusement will be pushed back as Surgeon Bong Dal Hee will be extended to 18 episodes due to its high ratings.

I also read that the airing date for Time Between Wolf and Dog will be further delayed until September. Aish, really. Let this be the official date. Please, no more delays!
-----
Thanks to this blog, my respect for Hollywood has changed dramatically. Not that Hollywood cares about what a little person like me thinks about them, but I'm writing this as a kind of "just so you know.." type thing.
-----
I'm probably going to do episodic summaries and/or screencaps of Hello!Miss because this blog is, afterall, "mukgu-fied." March 19th is the premiere. It's next Monday! Woot woot!

MUI-YAH?!

(Mui-yah means "what" in Korean.)

What am I reacting to? The 79th Oscars nomination. I am shocked and disappointed about several things.

First, The King and the Clown is not nominated for best foreign language film but Pan's Layrinth is?! So let me get this straight. The dialogue of the entry just needs to be in a foreign language, regardless of whether it's an American production team behind the movie?

Secondly, if The Departed wins for Best Picture, I might boycott American award shows and film critics.

My other thoughts on this issue are in agreement with those of a fellow blogger. Read her post here.

I'm Annoyed

Stupid people annoy me.

Incompetent smart-asses annoy me. (In other words, people who don't do their job well yet have the nerve to tell me what to do.)

Whiny people annoy me. It's like, just do your job. You're getting paid to do this; you're working, not volunteering. Geez, is that too much to ask?!

People who make "mountains out of molehills" annoy me.

Rude people annoy me.

Rude people who are telling me to be nice when, in fact, it should be the other way around, annoy me.

Selfish people annoy me.

Immature and bratty people annoy me.

Superficial people annoy me. I know you don't give a rat's ass about me so stop asking about how I'm doing.

Arrogant people, those who act like they're hot sh*t and that you should worship the ground they walk on, annoy me.

Difficult-to-please people annoy me. Okay, so it was our mistake for not getting the order right. However, we apologized and had it corrected for you. So please, get over it and stop complaining.

People with little or no sense of urgency annoy me.

In conclusion, people annoy me.

On top of that, my Mini Ipod suddenly stops working today. It doesn't turn on and I can't even recharge the battery. What sucks is that it's going to be costly to have the battery replaced and it's most likely that I'll do that because I don't have the luxury of purchasing another player. What sucks even more is that although I've had it for a few years now, I don't even use it that often. Damn!

Some Other Things...

Those who are fans of Goong and Se7en and are looking forward to Goong S... Goong S premieres on January 10th on MBC. WITH S2 will be providing the English fansubs for this drama.

--------

If you look to your right under "Currently Watching," the list includes 101st Proposal, Please Come Back, Soon Ae and Spring Waltz. The question is: am I ever going to finish watching these three shows? At the moment, the answer seems to be "never." 101st Proposal is getting repetitive and Spring Waltz is dreadful. I just hate dropping a drama and not finishing what I've started. But must I torture myself so? Even the gorgeous Daniel Henney isn't enough motivation for me to keep going. And trust me, he's beyond drool-worthy in here.

Please Come Back, Soon Ae is decent so that will probably be the first one I complete.

--------

I'm also watching The Snow Queen to support Hyun Bin. As a music video, it works beautifully. However, as a good, solid drama, the same cannot be said. Too cliche and too melodramatic. I was also very creeped out during the beginning of the drama because of the pairing of Hyun Bin and the actress who played the young Bo Ra. (Grown-up Bo Ra is played by Sung Yu Ri.) The actress they chose looked like she was twelve. Even if she did look like she was fourteen, which was the character's age, pairing her with Hyun Bin, who looked like he's 25, when he's supposedly 18, is just... ew. Why can't they find a younger looking actor to play the young Tae Wong (Hyun Bin's character)? That would have been better.

Any good points? Yes.
1) Nice soundtrack
2) Hyun Bin's hotness. He has really nice hair in here. His hair has the triple S quality: soft, shiny, and silky. Seriously, if Tae Wong/Deuk Gu can't be a boxer or chauffer, he can always be a model for Pantene Shampoo & Conditioner.

--------

Watch Jumong if you haven't already. I can't wait until more English subtitles come out. It's a great show!

--------

When will I finish writing the episode summaries/commentaries for Alone In Love? I don't know. I have that "illness," you know, the one that begins with an L and ends with Aziness. That's right, you guessed it: laziness. But no one really reads them, right? Except for maybe one person besides myself.

I Need Your Help!

Does anyone here knows where I can get the Precious Moments snow globe seen in My Girl? If you don't, do you happen to know someone who knows someone (perhaps in Seoul, Korea) who can help me with this matter? I'll pay for the cost and shipping fee.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about since you haven't seen My Girl (why haven't you?! ), here's what it looks like.

I Had A Bad Day

Today was a bad day at work. I don't think I've ever been this angry and feeling so insulted before due to a work-related matter. What happened? Oh, I'll tell you what happened.
See, at work we have several levels of managers. There's the main manager and then there's his boss, whom I shall refer to as A from here onward. (As to what the letter A stands for, you can use your imagination.) A does not work with us in the store on a regular basis; he only comes in about every five weeks to check up on us and see how we're doing. (Well, more like to yell at us but I'll get into that later.) Before today, I had always thought of him as a relatively understanding and friendly person. Well, after today, not anymore!
Anyway, yesterday A came in with another manager and spent a short time at the store, which was strange. Today, I arrived at work and A was there and looked to be evaluating the store. My direct manager didn't look too good so I was kind of worried. As it turned out, we were very short staffed for the shift and he had to call in several people to start work earlier than their scheduled time. To add salt to the wound, we were unexpectedly extremely busy today. Not only that, at a time when we needed more people to work, A needed to discuss something with my manager, so they were gone for what seemed like days. It was so busy that I don't even remember when was the last time I worked this hard and on an empty stomach, no less! Long story short, we were swamped so A had to stay longer at the store to help us out. During the shift, I conversed with A in the form of small talks and commented to A about how I'm a bit tired. And so, he offered to cover for me so that I can take a water break. I drank my water and went back to continue working at the position but A said, "You're back, already?! That break was too short so take a few more minutes and then come back." I thought, "Wow, how nice of him!" When I came back, A said that he felt tired already even though he had only been working at the position for few minutes. He also commented that he couldn't imagine doing this everyday and wondered how we can work the position everyday. When it slowed down a little bit, A went into the office to write up his evaluation. After he completed the evaluation, he smiled and said "bye" to everyone. In my opinion based on working there for quite a long time, I believed we handled the rush relatively good, considering the situation. Little did I know, what I thought was not even close to what was written on the evaluation and the things that were said by A afterward.
A short while after A left the store, there was a phone call for my manager and lo and behold, it was A on the other line. My manager took the phone call and came back looking pissed! Not knowing the whole situation and what was said between the two of them, I made a stupid comment which I now regret saying.
During the mid afternoon, when the night shift was starting, I saw a few new associates coming in to work. Since there were now plenty of people working and it wasn't that busy, I was sent home early. When my co-worker took over my position for me, he said, "Wow, I didn't know I was allowed to be at this position anymore after what happened!" Puzzled, I asked him what he meant by that. He told me that apparently, A said that the associates who work this position at the store couldn't handle the rush, so A called in associates from other stores who can handle the work. I was in disbelief and had that "Huh?! What the heck?!" look on my face as I couldn't believe that A actually had made that comment. Looking for confirmation, I talked to my manager. Unfortunately, it was true! I read the evaluation and it was not just bad, it was horrible. According to my manager, A called in after he left the store and said that unless the associates work the position like a certain associate, whom I shall refer to as mini A, we were deemed as "not good enough." I've observed and worked with mini A several times and he is not that great. All he has going for him is speed, minus the quality. Upon hearing this, I was furious! Furious! Why am I angry? I'm angry because of the crappy standard that we were being compared to. To be touting and emphasizing quality at meetings, reciting "quality over speed" while training new associates, and having the word "quality" in the store's slogan, how ironic and downright sad that A gave mini A such high marks when he doesn't work with mini A on a regular basis and evaluated the rest of us as "not good enough." In addition, I'm disappointed because I realized what kind of a person A is. Like a coin, he has two faces. A superficial happy face when he smiles at you and then turns around and stabs you in the back. If he thought that we weren't doing a good job while he was at the store, then tell us to our faces what we did wrong and how we could improve. Don't leave and then call the store to tell our manager and having us hear it from our manager. That's just shady, cowardice, and wrong! As of today, I lost all respect for A.
In summary, everytime I encounter a bad situation in life, I would try to make something positive out of the situation by reflecting on whether I've gotten something out of the experience by learning a good lesson. Well, a lesson is learnt here, dear reader. I've learn about what kind of person A really is. Although, it was unpleasant, it was good to know. Oh and another thing, the quote that I had on the LDH banner was really applicable and helpful. "NO ONE can make you feel inferior without your permision." Well, A, take your !@#$%^&*() elsewhere! You certainly do not have my permission. I won't allow it!

Quiet Journey to Islands for Relaxation

By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter (The Korea Times)

Those tired of the hustle and bustle of popular holiday destinations may find some small quiet islands to be the best place for relaxation.

The Korea Tourism Organization has selected five islands suitable for visiting in September under the theme of "Quiet and still travel to islands."

Polum Island and Chumun Island

Southwest off Kanghwa Island near Inchon, about one and a half hours from Seoul, there are a number of little known beautiful islands.

It is said that people who know Polum Island and Chumun Island keep it a secret so as to keep the seclusion for themselves.

The disadvantage of a visit to these isolated islands _ infrequent shuttle ships linking them with Kanghwa Island _ is an advantage for those seeking a quiet place, as not many people visit the islands.

Polum Island has Chogaegol beach, or "clam valley beach," famous for its abundant clams, and an 800-year-old gingko tree. In Chumun Island, there is a chapel built in traditional Korean house style with the 1 won contribution of each believer in 1923.

Taebinchang beach, Apchangsul beach and Twitchangsul beach on Chumun Island are quiet and beautiful beaches where pine trees are luxuriant and visitors can play with mud.

Oeyon Island

Oeyon Island is the farthest island from land among 70 islands in Poryong, South Chungchong Province.

With crystal-clear water at beaches, oddly shaped rocks including those called "Mae bawi (hawk rock)" and "Pyongpung bawi (folding screen rock)" add a certain mysteriousness to the island. Fishing on the rocks or collecting sea mussels and oysters are also possible ways to spend time here.

Visitors can walk in a forest of evergreens, state-designated natural monument No. 136, where the skies are covered with trees.

A famous feature on the island is two camellia trees called "Sarang namu (love tree)." The two trees are linked by the unusual formation of a common horizontal branch and legend has it that a couple walking under it will love each other forever.

The sunset and a row of lights from fishing boats at night are also spectacles not to be missed.

Sonyu Island

Bicycle riding around Sonyu Island will make for a pleasant fall picnic.

Sonyu Island, in the middle of a group of islands in Kunsan, North Cholla Province, has a 100-meter-high peak. It is called "Sonyubong (Sonyu peak)," meaning a peak of hermits, as the peak looks like two hermits sitting facing each other and playing "paduk," or Korean checkers.

Visitors can make a round of four islands, as Sonyu Island, Munyo Island, Changja Island and Taejang Island are connected by bridges with Sonyu at the center.

Riding bicycles along the shorelines of the islands, people can enjoy the natural scenery and fishing villages.

Yonhwa Island

Yonhwa Island, meaning lotus flower in the sea, is about one hour from Tongyong, South Kyongsang Province, by boat.

Seen far away, the island looks like either a lotus flower or a crouching dragon, having both the softness and beauty of lotus flower and the charisma of a dragon.

The whole island consists of oddly shaped cliffs. A group of rocks on the eastern coast presents various rock formations like Manmulsang of Mt. Kumgang in North Korea.

Yonhwa Island is also a haven for anglers, with red sea-bream, rock bream and sea bass in summer and black sea bream and rock fish in fall and winter.

Yonhwasa Temple and Podokam, a Buddhist hermitage, are also gaining popularity among Buddhists and visitors.

Udo (U Island)

Despite its location near Cheju Island, the most popular vacation destination in Korea, Udo is far from hustle-bustle and noise. But it still has lots of things to do and see, and is easily accessible from Cheju.

Arriving at the port of Udo, visitors can choose any transportation they want _ bicycle, motor scooter, all-terrain vehicle, or bus _ as the island is so small that making a round of it by bike takes only two to three hours.

The island is famous for its eight beautiful scenic views. There is the nation's only coral sand beach in the western island, which has white sands and emerald water.

In the eastern island, Kommolle beach presents a unique feature of black sands.

Besides visiting the famous view spots, it is also fun to explore the island's villages.

Nude Face

Going Makeup-free - Expose Your Face in All Its Natural Beauty

Makeup seems to no longer be in fashion. A makeup-free face has come to symbolize natural beauty, emerging as one of the latest cultural trends. The word “ssang-eol,” meaning “nude face,” became popular after several celebrities used it on TV shows. The fervor for not using makeup stemmed from the rising consciousness about healthy living, as people nowadays seem to prefer natural beauty more than artificially created beauty using makeup and plastic surgery. Adding to the “nude face” boom is people’s growing interest in the photos of celebrities’ makeup-free faces that have been circulating recently on the Internet.

Nude face trend on TV and in commercials

As if keeping pace with the “nude face” trend, many celebrities are appearing makeup-free on TV these days or at least use as little makeup as possible to underscore their inborn beauty. The “nude face” trend even rules TV commercials nowadays, with top stars boldly showing off their makeup-free faces and eliciting a favorable response from young viewers.

Nude faces everywhere

Celebrities are not the only ones who are deciding to forgo thick makeup these days. Interest in skincare has surged recently even among ordinary people, as a nude face has emerged as a symbol of natural beauty and a way to show off one’s perfect complexion. A growing number of women are frequenting beauty salons these days to receive facials and all kinds of dermatological surgeries. First of all, they remove spots and discoloration from their faces using lasers to make their complexion look flawless. Some women even draw permanent brows so as not to “look like Mona Lisa” after they remove makeup, while others have a red color injected into their lips to make them constantly look attractive. The only purpose of all such efforts is to look perfect without makeup. The clientele of wrinkle treatment, which in the past was the exclusive domain of people in their 40s and 50s, has grown to include people in their 20s as well. As interest in removing wrinkles has soared among young people, the number of wrinkle treatment patients younger than 30 has skyrocketed recently. Dermatological clinics have seen the number of their patients rise 30 percent this summer from the same period a year ago as a result of the “nude face” boom.

Cosmetics transformation

The “nude face” trend has also brought changes in women’s choice of cosmetic products. As a result, cosmetics companies are now focusing their business on developing skincare products rather than makeup products. Multi-functional cosmetic products that combine several functions in a single product, such as “lotion plus foundation,” or “makeup base plus foundation,” have hit the market in succession recently. Such multi-functional products create a clean, flawless look easily without having to put on thick makeup. Sales of concealers, which hide spots, freckles and discoloration, have been on the rise as well. Recently developed cosmetic products for the eyes and lips tend to contain pearl these days to underscore a clean, makeup-free complexion. Also popular are sunscreen and whitening products.

Going makeup-free

It takes continuous effort to create a flawless look without using makeup. Here are a few tips on how to achieve that look.

Sleep well

Getting enough sleep is essential if you want to have a beautiful complexion. Don’t miss the timeslot between midnight and 2 a.m., when skin cells regenerate.

Relieve stress

Stress not only accelerates the aging process but also causes dark circles under your eyes. Relieve stress through exercise and keep your body fit.

Drink lots of liquids

The lack of liquids in the body causes the skin to age. Drink at least eight glasses of fresh water a day to stay hydrated.

Apply sunscreen

Ultraviolet rays not only tan your skin but also cause spots and freckles. They also deprive the skin of elasticity and cause wrinkles. Apply sunscreen marked as “double plus” and SPF 15 or higher before going outside and reapply every two hours.

Eat nutritious foods

Green-leaf vegetables, egg yolk, fish and other foods containing vitamin A help prevent the oxidization of skin cell membranes, while vitamin E contained in nuts, vegetables, corn and beans helps prevent skin cell damage.

No smoking and drinking

Quit smoking and drinking for the sake of your health.

The “nude face” trend is the reflection of women’s rising interest in healthy skin, and that interest will only continue to rise in the future. But concerns are also rising that the obsession with “natural beauty” will only aggravate “lookism.” The “nude face” boom has emerged as a widely used commercial strategy of celebrity management agencies, beauty parlors and cosmetic companies. Let’s hope that the pursuit of natural beauty will translate into the increased expression of women’s self-confidence.

doozy: What an interesting article! I remember seeing a thread that has pictures of Korean actresses with minimal or no makeup on, but I couldn't find it at the moment. I'll post up the pictures if I do find them.

You Go, Girl!

This is dedicated to my dear friend.

Joy

I brewed myself a cup of TAZO's "Joy" tonight and this is what was written on the bag.

Isn't that cute?! Now, what would not be "cute" is if I actually write to them and I get no response.

Big Big World

I was listening to my music playlist today and the song Big Big World by Emilia came up. Any fans of TVB series remember this song? It was played throughout the popular drama Detective Investigation IV. The drama showcased one of the most compatible and memorable couples in TVB series: Jessica Hsuan and Louis Koo. Listening to the song brought back alot of good TVB memories from those days. It also made me think about how this kind of chemistry is lacking between co-stars in TVB series nowadays, which is partly the reason why I now watch more K-dramas than TVB series. My favorite couples from that "era" were Jessica & Louis and Flora Chan & Bowie Lam. Unfortunately, the chances of these actors pairing up again in TVB land is nil.

To download Big Big World by Emilia, click here. Let's reminisce about those good times together!

Testing...testing

First post on a first blog, ever! Since everyone is blogging these days, might as well jump on the bandwagon and go with the trend. (may be this is a good way to kill time...)
The last time I played around with Html coding was around 4 years ago so my memory of this whole "publishing" on the Internet thing is not as clear as I would like. Hence, please excuse any awful, weird-looking arrangement and/or formatting as I'm learning while doing.
Picked this template because of the green theme.

Purpose of this blog: Since Korean entertainment is becoming so popular nowadays, this blog's aim is to be a collection of news that I happen to stumble across while surfing the Net. Plus, throw in there some reviews about K-dramas that I'm currently watching and perhaps movie reviews/rantings, and go from there.

What does "mukgu-fied" mean? This blog's name is inspired by the K-drama My Girl, starring Lee Da Hae, Lee Dong Wook, Park Si Yeon, and Lee Joon Ki. "Mukgu-fied" is a termed coined by us fans of the show and of Lee Da Hae. (In short, in the drama LDH's character Ju Yoo Rin works at a tourism agency called Mukgu.com). Anyone who hasn't seen this drama, please do! It's highly recommended! For more info on this wonderful show, you can visit soompi.com or d-addicts.com.
